Conversion of VSAM COBOL to Oracle C# Using eavRPM™ Modernization

Tue, May 12 2009

DALLAS, TX - ATERAS, a leading provider of 100% automated solutions for legacy migration and modernization, announced today the completion of a COBOL VSAM conversion to C# Oracle for Anchorage Water & Wastewater Utility (AWWU) using a modernization tool called eavRPM™ (Rapid Program Modernization). The eavRPM tool set is intuitive, easy to use and produces “native” C# or JAVA solutions.

AWWU is dedicated to serving the community's public health needs by providing reliable, quality water and wastewater services in an environmentally sound and sustainable manner. The Utility's Special Assessments Office handles the billing, collection and reporting for all levied assessments for the Utility, as well as Public Works, and other municipal departments.

eavRPM modernizes all of the existing VSAM-based CICS COBOL programs and BMS maps so that these application software components execute against the new Oracle databases using Native SQL. The application software is modernized using eavRPM and is delivered as new C# .NET Oracle applications that perform the same business processes as their CICS predecessors but, with an updated look-and-feel.

“The ATERAS solution gave us a cost effective means to move from a legacy mainframe system to a modern infrastructure without loss in core business functionality, said” Howard Marsh, CIO Anchorage Water & Wastewater Utility.

The business benefits to AWWU are that the applications are no longer running on the mainframe and the resulting application is fully relational, running on Oracle with native C#. The end result is a fully modernized application with an updated look and feel with no loss in core business functionality. Now that the application is fully relational it will be easier to find and keep the support team. New processing introduces pull-downs, checkboxes, buttons and radio buttons to the end user experience. This solution eliminates the mainframe practices from the resulting modernized application. Additionally, the system will allow AWWU to become more cost effective, have quicker access to information, and allow AWWU to provide a high level of customer service to both its external and internal customers.

“eavRPM is a powerful tool that provides an easy method for modernization. eavRPM was designed to simplify the modernization process leveraging a direct connection to SQL Server, Oracle or DB2. Using the existing mainframe application, modern applications can be created via an easy-to-use painter; a user can drag and drop logos, objects, and database queries, modernizing the application while maintaining code functionality. Because eavRPM generates native C# or Java solutions and true .NET objects, it is able to deliver the C# applications to Visual Studio. The Java applications are delivered to your Integrated Development Environment (IDE) of choice. No additional tools are required, said” Scott Miller, CEO/ President ATERAS.
