ATERAS - automated solutions for legacy migration and modernization
HyperLink

Many organizations require the capabilities of the mainframe. The mainframe environment is well-established, is relatively stable, and is well-known by both the technical and end-user teams.

The mainframe:
  • Provides central processing
  • Is already installed, configured, secured and maintained
  • Provides centralized backup, recovery and hot-site capabilities
  • Contains all of the software needed for batch processing
  • Includes the systems used for DASD management, tape management, GDG management and other system-level functions
  • Handles nightly, weekly and monthly batch schedules
  • Handles production failures
  • Interfaces well with your banks, vendors, suppliers and other businesses
  • Possibly contains other applications not currently being considered for replacement
  • May be costly to maintain and upgrade
  • May be costly to run and manage
  • May not easily provide a GUI interface to users
  • May not provide a high-productivity development environment for your technical teams
  • May not provide the same features and functions available in many of the newer languages today
  • May not allow a central sign on and password point for cross-platform applications
  • May not provide the additional features necessary to stay ahead of your competition
Aging Databases

Aging mainframe applications may use database technology that is too expensive, inflexible, difficult to integrate, stagnant in the vendor's enhancement plan, or an otherwise poor fit for future processing goals. In particular, database management systems that are not relational and not accessible using the Structured Query Language (SQL) are often good candidates for replacement.

Aging Application Languages

Aging mainframe applications may use languages:

  • No longer being enhanced
  • Are difficult to support due to dwindling resource pool
  • Are too expensive to license
  • Do not fit future processing goals

In particular, language types specific to a non-relational database management system are often candidates for replacement.

DB-Shuttle Conversion

DB-Shuttle provides the ability to convert non-relational databases and file structures to relational technology for the mainframe or Windows environment. The conversion process is the same regardless of the target environment.

ATERAS provides conversion services for the following database and data types. Options depend upon current database management systems and plan for the future.

Current Database Conversion Options
  • From CA's IDMS on the mainframe
  • From IBM's IMS on the mainframe
  • From IBM's VSAM on the mainframe
  • From IBM's DB2 (or UDB) on the mainframe
  • From Oracle on the mainframe
  • To Microsoft's SQL Server on Windows
  • To IBM's UDB on Windows
  • To IBM's UDB on Solaris
  • To IBM's DB2 (or UDB) on the mainframe
